... the National and University Library of Bosnia-Herzegovina was destroyed by the extremist Serbs who besieged the city of Sarajevo. Hundreds of thousands of books, manuscripts and other publications were burned by fire that lasted three days. This criminal deed against the culture and memory of the Bosnian people sparked a great number of initiatives and solidarity worldwide.
The reconstruction of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina is still not completed and its functioning in the premises of a former military barracks is thwarted by financial shortages. The majority of libraries throughout the country did not completely recover from the war and do not function properly.
The difficulties faced by the librarians have consequences on the cultural life of the country as a whole.
